Caroline is routinely instructed for small claims, fast track and multi-track trials in personal injury, credit hire, contract disputes and road traffic matters. She appears for claimants and defendants in all proceedings from interim applications, CCMCs, allocation, disposals and appeals.

On the paperwork front, Caroline has a busy practice drafting Particulars of Claim, defence and counter-claims, witness statements, Part 18 and Part 35 questions and replies, application notices and proposed directions. She advises a diverse range of clients on all aspects of civil litigation, such as quantum, liability, causation and merits in RTA, employers’, occupiers’ and public liability cases.

As a member of the Attorney-General’s Regional Panel of counsel, Caroline regularly appears for the government in claims brought by litigants in person, often serving inmates, and so is called upon to convey complicated legal proceedings in straightforward terms.

Having undertaken specialist training in expert and vulnerable witness handling, Caroline is comfortable cross-examining anyone from consultant psychiatrists or pathologists to children at risk.

Caroline has experience of advising on unfair dismissal, discrimination, misconduct proceedings and redundancy, and has appeared at the Employment Tribunal. In the context of her government work, she regularly advises on Equality Act and human rights claims.

Caroline has extensive experience of appearing at inquests both with and without a jury and routinely deals with arguments relating to Article 2 and scope, causation, resumption, and Regulation 28. She represents police forces, local authorities, prisons and government departments so is well-versed in matters such as PII applications, anonymity and judicial review. She is familiar with the independent investigations that often accompany police and prison deaths and has provided training and guidance to agencies on preparing for challenging and high-profile inquiries. Caroline often handles the civil litigation that arises from inquests and can advise on settlement options.

More recently, Caroline has acted for the families of the deceased in cases involving suicide and mental health concerns, where there was no legal funding available for representation.

Caroline has been appointed as an Assistant Coroner for Cambridgeshire& Peterborough.

Caroline advises on and appears in civil actions against the police, predominantly acting for the police in claims both with and without a jury. She has experience of advising on misconduct matters and has been instructed on a number of high-profile health and safety and firearms cases. On a day-to-day level, her advice and representation is sought on claims involving matters as diverse as deployment of police dogs, property searches, legal privilege and disclosure, data protection and subject access requests, and seizure of goods and vehicles.

She has experience of delivering training to police forces on preparing for and attending at court and inquests, and regularly hosts witness conferences to assist officers and police staff who are called to give evidence.

In order to provide continuity to her police clients, she has conduct of a number of civil and human rights claims arising from inquests, also attending joint settlement meetings to negotiate settlements.

Caroline’s practice has developed to include a greater focus on public law. She regularly advises in cases where judicial review proceedings are contemplated and has an excellent track record in defending such actions brought against a range of public bodies. She has previously been a member of the Home Office Regional Panel for immigration appeals and now deals with multiple claims on behalf of government departments involving human rights, immigration and the Equality Act.
