Congratulations to Lord Justice Andrew Edis

Atlantic Chambers would like to congratulate former member Lord Justice Andrew Edis on his appointment as Deputy Senior Presiding Judge.

Lord Justice Edis was appointed by the Lord Chief Justice on 29th November 2021 with immediate effect. The appointment runs until 30th September 2023.

Sir Andrew Edis QC, called to the bar by the Honourable Society of Middle Temple in 1980, is a former member of Atlantic Chambers. During his time at chambers he established a criminal practice which would later see him instructed in high profile cases reported throughout the nation. Notable cases include:

–      R v Iftikhar Ahmed and Farzana Ahmed -Murder of Shafilea Ahmed

–      R v Gordon Park –  ‘Lady in the Lake’ murder

–      R v John Taft -‘Beauty in the Bath’ murder

–      R v Huhne

–      R v Brooks, Coulson and six Others- the News of the World newspaper phone-hacking scandal

During his legal career he has been ranked by bothChambers and PartnersandThe Legal 500as a top advocate in crime. His judicial career began when he was appointed as Assistant Recorder in 1994 then later, in 2001; he accepted an appointment as a Deputy High Court Judge.

Following a knighthood and appointment as Justice of the High Court on 1st October 2014, he was appointed as a Presiding Judge for the South Eastern Circuit from 2018, being appointed Lead Presider on the Circuit in 2020. During 2020, Lord Justice Edis chaired The Jury Trial Working Group, which was tasked with considering ways to re-start and conduct jury trials in light of the pandemic. On 27th January 2021, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal.

Lord Justice Edis brings his unrivalled experience of the criminal courts to his most recent appointment as Deputy Senior Presiding Judge and chambers wishes him every success in his new role.
